Anyone know the cost of 5yr old Rose of Sharon bush?
Q. This seems like an odd question but someone drove through the back of our yard and knocked out at least 5 of our 5 yr old double bloom Rose of Sharon bush's in the hedge. I can't seem to find an estimate for bush's this size and age. They were about 6' tall but we kept them trimmed and in good shape. Any help would be appreciated.

A. Probably that size between $19.00 to $25.00. That is taking into account their size and condition. To be precise, I would suggest that you get an estimate from a bonafide landscaper--you don't have to buy, but at least you'd have a ballpark figure.

How Can I Terminate a Rose of Sharon Bush?
Q. We have several Rose of Sharon bushes that have taken over other shubs in our yard. The "seedings" are everywhere! What is the best way to eliminate these beautfiul, but uncontrollable flowers from our yard? We have tried digging them up but they keep coming back the following Spring. (sigh) Thanks for your help. Thank you all so very much for all the great answers. I will be trying all the various tips you gave to solve this problem with this plant. I wish I could send a "start" to the member who asked, but beware they are much more trouble to care for then it seems. Again thanks to all who responded thus far.

A. The Rose of Sharon (aka Hardy Hibiscus) is a prolific seed dropper. The only way to eliminate the seedlings is remove the seeds from the mother. I suggest careful deadhedding - so to speak - of all seed heads prior to them drying and dropping. You'll have to keep on it, since the flowers mature at a varying rate (ergo the seeds mature at a varying rate). Or you could try an axe to the mother, but that would be such a shame ...

How do I root cuttings from a Rose of Sharon bush?
Q. I have several very large White Rose of Sharon bushes here in Georgia, USA and want to make a 600 foot long property division fence using cuttings from the bushes. What time of year do I do that and how do I do it?

A. I use root tone and always try to root plants in 3 gallon pots w/ cheap soil as long as you are not rooting plants in a green house. And put them in part shade (morning sun and afternoon shade) till they are rooted and show new growth (6-8 wees minimum). Put 6-7 cuttings per pot. I have a double pink althea and I rooted some babies this way.

A. The best time to transplant bushes and trees is in the fall after leaves have dropped or in the spring before they have started to bud. For trees of your size, I'd keep a 2-3 foot root ball. Dig a trench around each tree using a sharp spade to cut the roots cleanly. I'd have the hole for the new location dug so that you could transplant each tree immediately. Plant the trees at the same depth as they were growing and give them adequate water for the first couple of weeks. Mulching will help conserve moisture. you will also need to stake the trees for support the first year. If you are moving them from a shady to a sunny location, you might want to use some tree wrap to prevent sun scald on the trunk. Depending on your skill level, [cont.]

Staking a mature Rose of Sharon bush that is leaning badly?
Q. I have several mature Rose of Sharon bushes that are at least 10-12 feet. Slowly they have been leaning east (the way the wind blows here). I was thinking about putting a fence post on the west side of them, pulling them as straight as I can and fastening them to the post. Do you think this will correct the leaning? Or do you have other suggestions to fix this?

A. i have the same problem with my rose of sharon. the stems/trunk(s) are quite brittle yet they lean all the time. your solution is the best one and the good news is that they can be pruned way down and have what is called: adventitious budding. that means that it will sprout new leaves/branches from mature wood... wherever there was a leaf axil at one time. so... prune it back to the shape/size/height you want and then then gennntly stake it up (don't push too hard because the brittleness of the mature trunk will make it crack). you can adjust it little by little as the weeks go by. it will correct the leaning thing but it will never really behave and grow straight up on it's own without support because it already had that chance and… [cont.]

I need help with my Rose of Sharon Bush.?
Q. I planted my rose of sharon bushes in plenty of sun, water good, but during the mid day the leaves wilt, then about late afternoon it perks back up. Does the wind cause this? Maybe too much sun?
Asked by sharilyn i - Sat Apr 12 22:01:13 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Midday wilt is normal for many plants. It's caused by the sun and heat. The plant dehydrates at a faster rate than it can replenish the water from the roots and it wilts until the evening when it all balances out again. If you just recently planted it, it can take a bit of time for it to become established and for the roots to dig down. If you water the plant too often, the root system becomes shallow and the plant will always wilt in the heat. It's best to water plants with a good soak every few days than to lightly water them once a day. The roots go deeper looking for water and they can withstand droughts much better.

Can I move a Rose of Sharon bush into a sunnier location now in Arkansas? It's about 12 ft. tall, wont' bloom
Q. Maybe, I wasn't clear. The Rose of Sharon is now in the shade of a Bradford pear tree. It doesn't get sunlight, therefore it doesn't bloom (or very few at the very top where it gets a ray or 2). I was wondering if I can transplant the bush now (April in Zone 7) without hurting it too much. It is putting on leaves. Thankyou for responding.

A. Possibly you haven't pruned. To encourage the shrub to produce more flower buds, prune the plant in late winter before it breaks dormancy. For those of you troubled by deer eating your landscape shrubs, they would actually be doing you a favor by gnawing the branches of this one. Now, growing this shrub does present a few challenges; over the years I have encountered many folks who, come early May, have declared their Rose of Sharon bush dead because there is no sign of greenery. Remember: Mother Nature often throws a curve to test our gardening patience, and the lateness of this shrub to break dormancy is a perfect example of her challenge to us. Because it blooms so late in the growing season, it figures it can take most of the spring… [cont.]

A. Last I heard Ariel Sharon was in a coma, so he's probably out of it. However, there's a chorus of his coherts, the neocons who designed the Iraq war which is such a disaster, that have been urging us to attack Iran. You could say that the Israeli assault on Lebanon was a skirmish, in these neocon's minds. Last I heard, we had a few battleships near Iran. If we attack Iran, that will be the start of World War 3. I think this won't happen, as there are enough US generals who realize it would be a disaster times 10. At the time he went into his coma, Sharon had his hand in the murder of more innocent people than all the Islamic terrorists combined. Perhaps that's one of the reasons his visit to the dome mosque caused such an uproar. … [cont.]

Why isn't my Rose of Sharon bush leafing out yet.?
Q. I have a Rose of Sharon in my backyard, near the overhang of my roof. I know it's not the best place for it, but in two years it has grown from a tiny shoot to over four feet high. In early May this year, my Rose of Sharon bush started growing tiny leaves, and then it stopped. It's nearly July, and those little leaves haven't grown a bit. I made a tiny score mark on one of the branches, and it's still a bit green inside. I know the plant leafs out late, but shouldn't it have done more than this by now? What happened? How do I make it come back? I live in Zone 5.

A. When roses act this way there something wrong with their roots system. I tried and dug mine at one time because it does the same thing what I found out was almost all root were mostly dead. Only little part are still alive that's why it wasn't sufficient to support a good growth. Let's hope yours will put new roots system it will be fine next year.

Q. I have a pink Rose of Sharon bush. Is there a way to remove part of it to start a new one? How do I do this, specifically? Along the bottom of the "trunk" there are new "branches" and leaves growing. Do I just break them off and put them in dirt?

A. No the end must be smooth cut at an angle.Dipped in root start compound. Planted in moist potting soil and covered with a large jar.Or, if just experimenting try soaking in water with some miricle grow in it(till roots appear).(Depends on water ph). Be sure and cut just below a bud and keep enclosed(to slow transporation.

A. Yes, Water it and it should come back just fine. Placing them in a bucket of water might not have been the best thing - wrapping the roots in a plastic bag to keep them moist is good. A bucket of water can drown a plant.

Here you had both of them dipping their hands in removing settlers from Gaza and redecorating some of borders in West Bank and whatnot, but only Ariel gets a stroke. What gives? Why didn't Bush get the equal punishment like Sharon from heaven? Is Bush's reputation getting severely destroyed is punishment enough by failing everything he did as minor as eating a simple pretzel? I only want… [cont.]
