How many paper lanterns do I need and what size?
Q. For my wedding I want to put paper lanterns above the dance floor which is 20x20. It is in a tent with a flat ceiling so about average height. My wedding color is green with accent colors pink and orange so I want to get the paper lanterns in all 3 colors. Any suggestions on how many I should order of each and what size I should get. Thanks!

A. Really it depends on a bunch of things. How big are the lanterns? The big circular ones you would want to use sparingly. It is large and can very easily go across the line into super casual, backyard bbq instead of elegant wedding. The smaller rectangular ones are a bit nicer looking. Usually the light up ones are already on strings of 6 ft or 8 ft. In which case 2 or 3 would fit on a row. I don't know how the ceiling looks to know how you can get them up there but I'd put about 3 feet between them so about 5 or 6 rows of them. That's about 12. But it really depends on which lanterns you pick and how much extra light the room needs. You may think that looks like way too much. Are you draping them like a scallop? Straighter… [cont.]

A. I've gotten them at Target in the past... I would think that anyone who sells patio accessories would be worth checking out. Try Pier One, too.

how to make chinese paper lanterns?
Q. you know those little lanterns you make that are about the size of your palm and then you blow them up through the hole and they puff up and make lanterns? does anyone have the instructions for these?
Asked by A :) - Fri Oct 27 22:35:44 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Simple: Piece of paper, 8 1/2" X 11" Scissors Tape Fold the paper in half lengthwise. From the FOLDED edge, use the scissors to make 3 3/4" long cuts toward the other side, stopping about 3/4" from the open sides. Make the same length cuts every 3/4 to 1" apart to the other end of the folded paper. Carefully open up the paper, then bring the outside edges (the 8 1/2" sides) around and tape together. After it's taped, you can carefully shape it into a relatively round globe by pinching out the folds in the center fold.

What is the best way to hang japanese lanterns in an outdoor wedding reception tent?
Q. My wedding is next October and I want to hang lanterns that are either all or mostly lit from within. I'm looking for a cheap and easy way to hang them. I am also looking for ideas for fall decorations for my wedding. Any Ideas?
Asked by amber - Tue Sep 26 14:16:53 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A fairly cheap way would be to hang them by fishing line. This way you get to decide the distance you want to hang them from the celing. Fishing line is clear too so they will look like they are just suspended in mid air with nothing holding them up. Make sure and get some that has a "test" strength (6lb, 8lb, etc.) heavy enough to hold your size lantern.

How long does it take to dry out gourds and use them for lanterns?
Q. I was thinking about making bird feeders and lanterns out of dried out gourds. Yes, a weird hobby for a 15 year old girl to pick up but I got this book from the library and they look so pretty, and want to try. The book didnt really say how I could dry them out for yearly use, and I would like to know.
Asked by Charlie - Thu Sep 18 08:36:54 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It depends on the size of the gourd. Small ones will dry in a couple of months, larger ones can take a year or more to dry.

Are flying lanterns harmful to ocean life?
Q. I saw a video of a wedding with flying lanterns. We would like to do something similar on the beach. I've read that they float back to earth up to 1,000 yards away. They are biodegradable but I was wondering if anyone knows if they would be harmful to ocean life if they landed in the sea? They are made of rice paper and bamboo. Thanks.

How Do I Hang Chinese Lanterns?
Q. I am getting married and I want to hang Chinese lanterns in the venue where we are getting married. The problem is that the columns in the room are about 50 feet apart (it is a large room with a huge vaulted ceiling, and has columns spaced around the exterior wall). If I use fishing line will it sag? What else could I use? Should I just tie it around the columns or should I attach it some other way? Also, i cannot use nails or anything that will damage the building.
Asked by Me - Thu Jul 10 11:30:36 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Instead of fishing wire, you could try thin metal wire, which would have less elasticity to it. Try Home Depot or Lowe's to get that in bulk. For hanging it from the columns, you could use plastic hooks with adhesive on the back. 3M makes some, and most general stores (e.g. Target) sell them. Of course, if you're hanging multiple lanterns from each wire, you need to ensure the hooks will support the weight. Otherwise, they might come falling down during the event!! (No bride needs that stress...) The 3M website shows how much weight each hook is designed to hold, though I'd go with one that holds more than you need...

A. You can find paper lanterns at Pier 1 Imports. I am including a link for you to check them out. There are chinese styles as well as others like stars and so on. The other place I've seen them is at a store called JYSK but I don't see them on their website. Also, Ikea has the electric types in different shapes and I've provided a link for that too. Lastly, I don't know if you have any of those types of stores you can find in many cities that sells incense, stones and crystals, tribal masks, dream catchers... you know what I mean right - they almost always carry these types of lanterns. Good luck.
