How to grow catnip in containers, possibly indoors??
Q. My cats love catnip and I'm really new to gardening but would like to grow it for them. The problem is I live in an apartment so it must be in containers. I know it's supposed to spread like wild fire when it grows, so is it even ok to plant it in pots? The other question is, would it be better if I kept it in the house? I don't care if my cats destroy it, which they probably will LOL, but I'm afriad leaving it outside will attract many stray cats and my landlord will get upset about it. Any other tips about growing it would be great, thanks.

A. You can grow them in window pots. They are usually used for herb gardens. That will give it room to grow and will easily sit in the window for some sun! When you first plant the seeds, keep them extra moist- but don't drown them. I would cover the pot with plastic wrap to create a green house to keep heat and moisture in. That should speed up the growth. After you see the first green sticking out the ground, keep the plastic off. It should grow just fine in your house as long as it gets plenty of light from the window. Goodluck!

What should I use to grow grass in my yard where there are patches missing?
Q. There are patches of grass missing in my front yard from the previous owners having a huge pot with plants in it sitting on the grass. There is some grass growing back in that area but there are also those scary looking weeds too. What should I use to grow new grass there but kill the weeds that are trying to grow there? Also, in my back yard there is a circular patch of grass missing around my tree. It looks like it either doesn't grow well there because when the leaves grow on the tree there is too much shade or the previous owners dogs would not allow it to grow by doing their business there. What can I use to grow grass in that shady area?

A. Hey Katerbear B, Apples, Peaches, Plums should all grow in your area - be sure to get trees suited to your zone. 3a-4b depending on what part of Montana you live in. For Vegetables, the principle of germination time plus growing to harvest time must be more than your number of non-freeze days. Or, you can start the vegies inside. You should be able to grow summer squash, carrots, tomato, beets, herbs, and a bunch of other stuff. Read a lot, you are in a short season area. Happy Gardening.

How to grow more herb plants by cutting them?
Q. Does anyone know how I can grow herb cuttings? I can't grow herbs by seed, and I don't want to buy any more. Can you cut them and replant the cutting? And if so, will they actually grow?
Asked by triversia - Sun May 3 18:13:16 2009 - Other - Home & Garden - 1 Answers - Comments

A. It probably depends on the herb. Some will grow from cuttings if you stick the cuttings in water first and wait for a few roots to grow, or use rooting powder and stick them in soil or vermiculite. Why not try and see?

How to grow longer hair naturally and fast?
Q. I have had long hair for about seven or eight years, and up until now I haven't really wanted it to grow longer. I wanted to know how to help it grow out longer as quickly and natural as possible. I keep it braided at least one or two weeks, and every once and a while I'll leave it down for a few days to take a break away from the braids. I'd like to grow it to where it comes down to around my shoulder blade, and right now it comes past my neck a little.

How can I grow productive tomato plants?
Q. I quit trying to grow tomatoes a few years ago because, I can grow lovely, tall, healthy looking plants but, no tomatoes? Is there something I can do to grow great tasting tomatoes? I always planted them where they would have full sun all day. Can they grow and produce in shady areas?
Asked by Mee-Maw - Mon Mar 19 23:59:31 2007 - Garden & Landscape - 9 Answers - Comments

A. Tomatoes grow well under full sun conditions, just orientate the rows from south to north not east to west other wise the fruit from one side would get sunburns. If you grow the tomatoes at open field they get pretty good air pollination you don t need to do something else. If you over water your plants or over fertilize them (specially with great amount of nitrogen) you push the plant to grow more vegetative rather to start to set fruit. When you see that the first flower set opens change the fertilization program to one N-P-K relation with less nitrogen and more potassium (e.g. from a 6-6-6 at the beginning to a 5-3-8) and don t over water them. You should find the rigth planting dates from your area because if your plant the too early… [cont.]

A. Use vermi-composted soil, stack some biomass like leaves, or anything that is biodegradable. then put some worms preferably nightcrawlers on it. After 120 days or less the worms have composted the biomass then you can use it as your soil to plant your plants. You can re-use the juveniles for more vermi-compost. You don't need to apply fertilizer on this soil.

I want to grow concord grapes, but where do I start?
Q. My parents had a concord grape vine in Michigan when I was a child. I moved to Nebraska 6 years ago and have yet to ever find concord grapes for sale anywhere. I want to grow my own concord grapes now. I have a towne home and want to grow them on my second story balcony. I have lots of room for it, but I don't know where to begin. Is this a feasible idea? Can concord grapes be grown in a plant box as long as they have something to climb on?
Asked by Jordan M - Mon Oct 8 21:34:32 2007 - Garden & Landscape - 3 Answers - Comments

A. It's feasible :) Take some time and get to know your grape by Googling "growing concord grapes in Nebraska". I found a video at almost to the bottom of the page (do a CNTRL F and put in concord and you'll see the video link). They say you have to do a great deal of pruning on the concord vines. I'm sure temperature, climate, water, soil and p H balance has a lot to do with a good, quality grape, too, so again it's well worth your time to study up on it. Michigan has a much different climate that grapes adore but it's not impossible to grow the grapes in Nebraska. You just have to use extra methods for a good grape. Again, because the climates and growing circumstances are much different, you might get a different tasting Concord.… [cont.]

Black people grow some facial hair but not anywhere as much as middle eastern, indian, or white people. However, east asian and native american men seem to grow almost no facial hair. Is there any reason for this?

Can you grow plants in anything other than soil?
Q. I know obviously hydroponics, but I don't want to buy a hydroponic kit with all the nutrients you have to be constantly adding to the water. Will any plants just grow sitting in regular water? I know you can start trimmings in just a glass of water to get the roots going, but will anything keep growing like that. Could you grow a plant in something completely random like shredded paper?
Asked by Yarcofin - Mon Dec 24 20:54:05 2007 - Garden & Landscape - 7 Answers - Comments

A. There are some soil-less growing mediums such as coconut fiber (coir) and vermiculite. Some plants will grow in plain water like: lucky bamboo (Dracaena species) Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum), Flamingo Flower (Anthurium) and Devil's Ivy (Pothos). If your are interested in growing edibles indoors without soil you might consider an Aerogarden. It is a hydroponic system, but all you do is add water, drop their nutient pellet in and drop in the seeds. There is no measuring, or work involved and the plants grow extremely fast. No green thumb required.

How to grow basil at home in a pot?

Does it grow better in a very sunlit environment, or in semi-shade? Can it grow in a temperature of about 66-69 degrees? What can I do to increase its chance of growing?

A. Rotting stems, to much water. Place in southern window full sun.Use ready mix potting soil with fertilizer for vegetables. Start in 3-4 inch pot. Keep seeds moist until the seeds begin to sprout. Then monitor daily. Being a beginner just buy a soil water senser it will tell you when water. Or allow the soil to be dry for 3 days before watering again. Once the plants are established. Temperture should be in the 70s.

What plants grow quickly under grow lights?
Q. I am having an art show and I'm planning on showing one of my sculptures on a recessed table with soil, plants, and a large grow light. Are there any very fast growing ivies or weeds anyone can recommend? Ones that do well indoors under grow lights?
Asked by scott b - Sun Nov 14 13:14:00 2010 - Garden & Landscape - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Pothos always do well under grow lights, annuals also do very well since they have to grow so much in such a small period. You should also understand the mechanism behind plant growth, as long as there is sun (light) out the plants will continue to grow, so long as they are in the right medium. I would suggest planting some ivy, and pothos and balancing them out, with flowers such as tall marigolds, tall colorful grasses and even some moss. I have no Idea what your sculpture looks like but I think with those types of plants you can create a more color texture depth and dimension to your sculpture. I hope that helps.

Soil texture, nutrients, and radish variety are three factors that influence radish size. Given a specific variety - We could vary the texture of the soil we can test various nutrient factors. sand, peat moss, vermiculite, compost, and nutrients If we wanted to vary the soil mixture, then here are good candidates. mix 50% course sand, 25% peat moss, 25% vermiculite for the soil mix 25% course sand, 25% peat moss, 50% vermiculite mix 25% course sand, 50% peat moss, 25% vermiculite Add compost to this mixture to get a bunch of micronutrients and carbon into… [cont.]

A. Here are some tips: Assess the current condition of your hair. Is it healthy, shiny and strong, or has it been damaged from heat, sun, coloring, etc.? You don't want to grow out hair that is damaged and scraggly. If you suffer from split, thin, and dry ends, seriously consider getting a trim to remove as much of the damage as possible. Split ends will not slow down growth, as your hair grows from the scalp, but getting rid of them will make your hair more neat and attractive. Look at your overall health and your lifestyle. How is your diet? Do you exercise and sleep enough? Are you under a large amount of stress? If your body is lacking in health, your hair will be lacking as well.
