Has anyone ever had to euthanize their dog because it was so aggressive?
Q. I had to euthanize my 2 year old dog about one month ago because she was so aggressive. She was very gentle with people, but she tried to kill three different dogs. I was trying to find her a single dog home, but before I could, she bit my mom really bad. Did I do the right thing? When I first got her, she was food aggressive, but I trained that out of her. From what I could tell, she was abused as a puppy. She only had half a tail. I train service dogs, so I can't have aggressive dogs at my house. Now I only have three dogs, but the house is much less tense with her gone. In response to Debbie C. I know how to train a dog, I have been training service dogs for 5 years. I adopted her from a local shelter when she was about 6 months old.… [cont.]

A. Yes you did the right thing. I just recently had to have two put to sleep because they were aggressive to people. It really sucks doesn't it. I can handle if they are dog aggressive even if they don't like cats but we can not adopt out nor can I feel safe with a dog that bites people. I was sick of having to tell people every time they came near my house or in the cute little one bites then they were scared of him and never gave him a chance. It had been six months and he was getting worse. Stand offish and the look inhis eye to bite for any reason. We did have a little time he seemed to make progress then kept biting people at petsmart. You did the right thing. What if your dog had gotten upset and a childs face had been in the way?? You… [cont.]

What's the best way to euthanize an animal?
Q. I live on a farm and have livestock, chickens, dogs. I take very good care of them. Sometimes animals get sick or injured and they suffer terribly. I nurse them back to health when I can, but sometimes there is nothing that can be done. I need to know the best way to euthanize them humanely -- by injection preferably. Spare me the "take them to the vet" stuff (vets euthanize animals too). God knows my vet bills are high enough. And spare me any "you don't deserve a pet" lectures -- I have way more than my share of animals that have been dumped along my road; animals that I take in and care for. Last week I couldn't afford the extra $500 for another vet bill, and consequently was left to watch my dog suffer b/c I couldn't [cont.]

A. You can't get they drug Euthanol. You have to have a license in order to even poses it. Because it is a controlled substance you can not get it as a prescription. Animal Control would be your best bet. You can take your animal there and they should have a Vet or Vet tech who is allowed to administer the drug. Call your local shelters and ask them if that is a possibility. I don't see how your vet would charge $500 dollars to euthanize an animal. You might want to find a new vet. Animal control or the Humane society might be able to refer you to a vet in your area.

how can i humanely euthanize my goldfish?
Q. my oranda is floating at the top of the tank, swirling from the force of the filter. gills are totally wide open, and fins not moving at all. she was battling fin rot, and it looks like she is about to die. can i freeze her in the refridgerator? i dont have clove oil or vodka, so any other way to euthanize her would be appreciated. thanks. gosh swinging her against a countertop sounds violent. sigh! i guess i would rather her die painlessly than suffer longer. i dont think i could open the bag and look at her after i banged her up, but ill just have to be a man and suck it up. she was my favorite because she was always super excited to see me... guys, i was about to end her life when i saw she had already died. im relieved that i didnt… [cont.]

A. Your fish would suffocate before it froze. I'm sorry to have to give you the gory details, but the fastest and most efficient method I ever found for destroying a fish was to place them in a plastic bag, swing it, and hit the bag on a countertop as hard as I could. Basically, it fractures the skull, separates the spinal cord, and kills the fish instantly. You can put a paper bag over the plastic bag so you can't see it. I know this sounds awful, but I managed a pet store for 8 years and this was more humane than letting a fish suffer a slow death. I would not recommend flushing it or trying to put vodka in water- the fish will feel the chlorine/alcohol in its gills and that burns. The toilet will also bludgeon it to death. This is my… [cont.]

Should I euthanize a blind koi that is in my pond?
Q. I had an outbreak of khv in my pond killing 8 of my 12 koi. Three completely avoided the virus. The fourth was sick but seemed to be improving. Then both his eyes bulged out and he is now blind. He seems content in the pond, eating off the bottom but don't know if it would be more humane to euthanize him or let him live out his life as he is. The remaining koi and goldfish don't bother him.

Why do people repeatedly euthanize their pets for stupid reasons?
Q. A family member keeps buying dogs, keeps for a few months, then decides to euthanize them: barks too much, pees in house, kids want another dog, dog grew up too big. They have disposed of 8 pets that I know of . Is there anything that can be done to stop this carnage? I think they are "sick" people, but is there something I can do, I have talked till I'm blue in the face, but they won't listen!
Asked by JB - Mon Nov 1 12:22:14 2010 - Dogs - 9 Answers - Comments

A. It's stupid. At least hand it to the shelter-they'll have some kinds of chances. And I HATE it when people who put their dogs/cat down for behavior problems say because "they were so upset they didn't want to live" Admit it. The problem was unmanageable to you and you sought this. Most pets could probably kill themselves if they really wanted to-except they're ANIMALS.

Why is it legal to euthanize pets that are not even sick or with something curable?
Q. I get mad every time I hear people saying that they are going to put down their pets because they don't have time to take care of them (which is usually said with a lame excuse), and those who's doing the same for pets with broken bones. In that case, we should also euthanize people with broken legs or harms, and children with parents who cannot take care of them properly. As you can see, it's completely illogical, so it's the same with pets. What do you think?
Asked by NONAME - Sun Nov 7 00:54:44 2010 - Law & Ethics - 4 Answers - Comments

A. The question should be, why is it illegal to euthanize children? At least dogs and cats are useful. A dog will warn you about strangers and help protect your home, a cat will catch mice for you. A kid will shi+ his pants for the first 3-4 years, and there's no guarantee it will even give a damn about you when you get old.

Q. does it make any sense at all that people are allowed to kill and euthanize animals in zoos just because they get old and they think their life is getting to be poor quality? yet people suffering badly of cancer and diseases have to suffer through it until they finally die and are not allowed to be euthanized the same peaceful way as animals are?

A. it depends the country you're in, but in general it is not allowed to kill a baby just because it's deformed. in certain countries like switzerland, people can decide they want to die with the help of a doctor, but deciding to end somebodies life without their approval is not allowed. however claiming compensation for deformities/... might be possible in certain cases

Q. I want to be a vet but I refuse to euthanize an animal. Can I still be a vet?
Asked by mathwhiz454 - Sun Oct 12 21:27:29 2008 - Medicine - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Part of being a vet is knowing when an animal needs to be put out of it's misery, with that being said, yes you would need to learn that. What are your reasons for not wanting to euthanize an animal? If you have seen an animal in needless suffering you may change your mind. I have laid beside a horse with cancer that went down and was unable to get up. During that time the weight of their own bodies can and will crush their internal organs, causing organ failure and causing them excruciating pain, and an amount of suffering you nor I could know. Should that once energetic Arabian lay there and die in pain, that being his last knowledge of the world? Or should he be put out of that pain and misery, letting him draw his last dying breath in… [cont.]

Why is it humane to euthanize a pet but sinful to euthanize a human being?
Q. when it is suffering, and there is no hope for recovery? Wouldn't it be more humane to just give a person in intractable pain a big shot of morphine or whatever they give to dogs, I mean it only takes a second. Also, if you are put under as in general anesthesia, they can put you to death and you would never know the difference.

Will the SPCA euthanize a cat with an expired microchip?
Q. If a cat has a microchip, but the owner didn't pay the renewal fee, will the SPCA euthanize the cat? Or will they be nice enough to call the owner even though the microchip fee wasn't renewed?
Asked by cool guy - Mon May 17 15:40:11 2010 - Cats - 3 Answers - Comments

A. If a chip cannot be traced to an owner (as in they never registered it or changed the address when they moved, etc.) then the cat takes its chances the same as any cat without a microchip. All they shelter can do is call the chip registry. If the chip isn't registered, or the owner can't be located, then the chip does no good at all.

Is it better to euthanize a diabetic dog that will go blind?
Q. We've just found out that my sister's dog is diabetic. He's about eight years old and my dad just thought he was getting old so he put that down to the weight loss but lately he's been throwing up so we took him to the vet. P.J will go blind no matter what we do but should we keep up the treatment with him until his time or would it be better for him to euthanize him.

A. I'd ask your vet what the chances are that the dog can be returned to some level of good health. While they do not have magic balls they can see in to predict the future- many times they have a gut feeling about how far gone a pet's health is and the chances of recovery. My husband is a vet and is asked many times- "What would you do if this was your pet?" He gives an honest answer- even if it is hard to hear

Less expensive ways to euthanize my cat?
Q. My cat has gotten very old and now it quit using the litterbox when it decides it wants to piss or crap on the floor. I've tried to be patient but the problem seems permanent and I can't put it outside because I live in the city. The vet told me it would be 175$(!!) to euthanize the cat, but I can't afford that. Is there a humane sort of way I can euthanize it at home or will the pound do it for free?
Asked by - Tue Aug 2 21:15:40 2011 - Cats - 11 Answers - Comments

A. Most shelters offer low cost euthanasia. I would also call around and ask other vets. That's a bit ridiculous unless you're asking for a private cremation and the ashes to be returned to you. But have you ever taken this cat to a vet to find out WHY he's having issues? Cats don't die from being old they die of cancers, kidney disease, etc. What's goin on could be treatable. How old is he?

Why is it considered humane to euthanize an animal, but deplorable to euthanize a human?
Q. We put pets down at the vet all the time, and while it is sad, there is an understanding that it is best for the animal. However if a person is terminally ill and in a lot of pain, it is a crime to extend them the same option. I am not taking sides on this, just interested to hear opinions on the matter.
Asked by conshy3 - Tue Jun 17 12:01:36 2008 - Law & Ethics - 4 Answers - Comments

A. It is called a double standard. Not every law makes sense, this is one of them. People should be legally allowed to decide when and how to end their lives when faced with a terminal illness.

Why is it ok to Euthanize shelter animals but not prison convicts?
Q. There are truckloads of dead animals that shelters pack up like garbage. This happens and people know it. But God forbid...wait, no...people forbid that when it's ok to kill family pets, it's not ok to euthanize a child rapist. So why is it ok that we can kill other living creatures so much easier than human beings who may deserve it? Is it immoral to murder a murderer but it's ok to murder another innocent being just because they can't speak or be as smart as us? I wonder if there is anyone that finds it unfair how we treat our mother nature, when we have been endowed with so much evolutionary advantages at the top of the food chain. Are we really that un-responsible?
