How many ppm and % is 39000 mg/L of ethanol in a 200m L bottle of water?
Q. I have a 200m L bottle of water that has been contaminated with ethanol. The concentration of ethanol is 39000 mg/L. What is the percentage of the bottle that is ethanol and how many parts per million of ethanol are in the bottle?
Asked by jas114 - Thu Jan 10 15:57:18 2008 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Percentage and parts per million are dimensionless quantities. Assuming a solution density of 1g/m L, the ethanol percentage is calculated as follows: 39000 mg/L * 1L/1000m L * 1g/1000mg * 1g/m L= 0.39g/g Multiply the above dimensionless result by 100% for the percentage (39%), or multiply the result by 10^6 ppm for the parts per million (39000 ppm).

How to protect from Ethanol Phase Separation in Bertram Fiberglass Gas Tanks with E-10 Gasoline?
Q. Hi, I have a 1985 Bertram 30 with a 220 Gallon Fiberglass Tank. As we approach the end of the season in the Northeast, we now have to start planning for Winterization. A standard procedure for Winterization over the years was to fill up your tanks with Gasoline before winter storage to cut down on water/condensation. That was before this Ethanol fiasco! Now if we have phase separation in the E-10 Gas, the Ethanol can eat away at the fiberglass resin in the tanks and also leave deposits in the Heads of the engine. I have been treating the fuel with Startron for the past year. What should I do this Winter? Should I fill up the tank with Startron treated fuel or should I leave 1/2 or even less than of tank of Startron treated fuel?
Asked by Edward P - Mon Sep 17 08:35:55 2007 - Boats & Boating - 1 Answers - Comments

A. You have 2 choices really. You can fill it up and treat it or you should empty it entirely and run your engine out of gas also. If you leave it any other way you invite trouble. Ethanol will pull moisture out of the air and into the tank also giving you troubles. We have had ethanol for a few years in the northeast now so if you have not had trouble yet you should be fine leaving it full and treating it. Good luck.

What is the Molarity of ethanol in a "92 proof" solution of ethanol in water?
Q. In the United States, alcohol is rated according to "proof" which is usually defined as twice the percent by volume of pure ethanol in solution, measured at 60*F. What is the molarity of ethanol in a "92 proof" solution of ethanol in water. The density of ethanol (C2H5OH, molar mass=46g/mole) is 0.80g/cm^3 at 60*F; the density of water (H2O, molar mass= 18g/mole) is 1.0 gm/cm^3 at 60*F(15.5*C) Please Explain
Asked by da_prospect_2006 S - Thu Oct 11 23:13:05 2007 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. 92 proof is 46% by volume. So let's assume you have 1,000 m L of mix. So you have 460 ml of ethanol and 540 ml of water. calculate the mass of ethanol (460)(0.80) = grams of ethanol Convert to moles by dividing by 46 g /mol SInce it is 1 liter, this is also the molarity

How many grams of ethanol must be added to 90g water to make a solution containing equal numbers of?
Q. How many grams of ethanol (C2H5OH) must be added to 90g water to make a solution containing equal numbers of ethanol and water molecules? The answer is 2.3 x 10^2 but I'm not sure how to do it.
Asked by Yarly - Sun Jul 31 00:44:16 2011 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Straight forward. 90 g of water is 90/18 = 5 moles, so you will need 5 moles of ethanol (mol wt 46), so 46*5 = 230 g of ethanol. Based on Avagadro principle, equal moles of both will have equal nos of molecules

Would a injection of ethanol be a good way to euthanize a small animal?
Q. I don't plan to do it but it is just a random thought. Would a lethal dose of ethanol be a efficient and painless way to euthanize a small animal. From what i know small dosages administered directly in the bloodstream causes almost instant drunkenness. Of course being drunk usually eliminates any pain and loss of consciousness will shortly follow if the blood alcohol concentration is high enough. Sounds painless, I was just Curious if that was actually the case.

How does adding ethanol effect the octane rating of gasoline?
Q. Would it be helpful to put a gallon of ethanol in my tank each time I fill up? There is a station near me that is selling E-85 for around a buck less than 87 octane gasoline.
Asked by it is i - Fri Apr 18 18:41:48 2008 - Engineering - 5 Answers - Comments

A. You be the judge... Ethanol burns very hot and is not prone to preignition... common to high octane numbers... which is the ability to withstand higher compressions without knocking due to preignition. E85 has an octane rating of 105 (compared to 89-93 for normal US gasolines) and ethanol by itself is rated at 116... Most "octane boosters" are made of toluene or ethanol or xylene... Using a gasoline with too high an octane can cause stalling when cold and possible valve damage due to not seating to transfer heat. A gallon of ethanol per 12-20 gallons should be fine. Back in the 'old' days we used to have this stuff called gasohol that was 5 to 10 percent ethanol or methanol (Carter started it during the fuel crunch, funny how we… [cont.]

Where can I find gasoline with the lowest ethanol content?
Q. I am looking for gasoline in the US that has the least amount of ethanol alowed. Are there any companies that sell gasoline without ethanol still? Of course, it would help if these companies were in NH. Why? Because I have a turbo charged engine, I like getter better fuel economy, and I like getting more HP. The fuel is for a car, not a boat. I know some marinas sell fuel with an average or maximum of 10% ethanol, whereas many or most service stations sell fuel with an average or at least 10%. However, I don't think I can fuel my car at a marina. :-)

A. Contary to a another post, you DO get lower mileage with an ethanol blend because of its lower "heat content". There are test kits of alcohol in fuel, here's one: About $4/test. You could do you own water extraction, like in the test kit. But you won't come out ahead economically, because you'll be throwing away the alcohol (it is denatured with methanol and it will have carcinogenci benzene too, so DON'T drink it). Check different retailers, they'll get their gasoline from two or three different refineries in your area. Go to the local refinery or bulk fuel terminal and be amused to see 5 to 8 differently branded fuel trucks pull up. All those companies who like to say their gasoline is somehow better all get it from the some… [cont.]

A. It doesn't matter. if you buy gas in a county where oxygenated fuel is required, and MTBE is outlawed, all stations will have E-10. Apparently, from what you're telling me, some stations are selling E-10 even in counties where it's not required. Must be too much trouble for the distributors or something. If it's any consolation, I been running E-10 in my vehicles for years with no adverse consequences. good idea though, not mixing e-10 & non-ethanol gas in your tank. might take awhile, but sounds like you'll be doing some state by state, county by county research before your trip. It's going to be mostly in counties with large population centers, where the air quality is a concern. guess you'll have to plan your fill-ups outside of big… [cont.]

A. In solution ethanol does not dissociate like Na Cl ... itis covalently bonded unlike Na Cl which is ionic so in solution you have molecules of C2H5OH and water mostly water does dissociate to a very small extent ( 10 ^-7) so most of the water is H2O molecules so the answer to your question is ... H2O and C2H5OH molecules

A. About 350 g shade dried and powdered leaves of Annona muricata are exhaustively extracted with 95% ethanol, using Soxhlet apparatus. The residue is filtered and concentrated in vacuo to a syrupy consistency. The extract is stored in a desiccator. The amount of solvent should be about the double of plant material. Page 481 >
