What are the cords connected to the power button of a computer called?
Q. I am fixing my friends computer and I can't remeber what the cords connected to the power button are called. It is like a little wiring, one end is a connector that connects to the motherboard and the other end is the actual power button. The computer is a Gateway desktop model number:510. Thanks.

How do interior designers hide lamp cords?
Q. Bust open any copy of Martha Stewart Living, or House Beautiful, or Fancy Shmancy Living, and it becomes immediately apparent that the owners of these beautifully decorated homes do not have lamps, phones, or other electronic equipment with power cords. Is there really a way to hide them in a normal home, or are they just hidden away for the photo spread? Here's an example: Where are the cords for the lamps?
Asked by Blossomo - Sun Apr 27 06:04:40 2008 - - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Being Martha, it's entirely possible that she had a receptacle installed in the floor directly under the lamp. That's a possibility, and I'd guess very likely. You can do that if you like, but remember-real people don't have her budget to move the outlet and patch the floor when we rearrange the furniture. Floor outlets do work nicely though. Hope this helps.

Q. Ive got a new stereo and i want to extend the speakers about three metres away and the cords going from the stereo to the speakers are not long enought. I was wondering how to install extention cords and how much they would cost? The stereo is a slim line TDK stereo about $170
Asked by Coliflowa C - Sun Jan 18 03:41:33 2009 - - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Speaker cable can vary on price depending on the quality you're looking for, but for that stereo, i'd say you can get a spool of the low-middle end stuff - about 50 ft (roughly 16 meters) for less than $30 (or maybe 20 Euro?) Installing it should be as simple as detaching the cable from the back of the stereo and speakers by the clip or plunger and installing the new one. In the event that the speakers and stereo are wired together with no visible release, you could either open up the speaker and cut original wire and solder in the new one, doing the same with the stereo if you wanted - or just cut the original wire, strip the casing and twist it together with the new wire and tape the twisted connections separately (to avoid creating a… [cont.]

How do I protect my computer speakers' cords from being chewed through by the cat?
Q. I have a cat that for some reason won't seem to stop chewing through the computer cords. We already got a cord protecter to stop her from messing with the internet cord, but she can still mess with the speaker cords & there are visible bite marks. How do I stop her from chewing up the cord? We aren't going to get rid of the cat and kicking her ass won't help because I know she doesn't know any better. I'm thinking either wrap the cord with duct tape or cover it in hot sauce so she'll learn not to do it again. Any other ideas?

A. Hot sauce definately works unless you get a cat who actually likes it. One of mine does but luckily he never was a chewer. You can also try vinegar. One good thing that would work is to turn the ape on the cords so the sticky side faces out. Cats hate tape and this would definately keep the cat off. Good luck!

How do you keep pet rabbits from chewing on electrical cords?
Q. My friend lets his new bunny run around the house and it always wants to chew on electrical cords. How should he keep the bunny from becoming dinner?
Asked by Lost OC Boy - Sun Aug 24 09:19:13 2008 - - 6 Answers - Comments

A. I found the most effective way to discourage the rabbit from chewing on anything is to draw monster faces on the objects. The rabbit may not initially be scared to go near them, but if you add a Halloween soundtrack and the occasional blow dart (from the other side of the room of course) they do learn to stay away from certain objects. It's the exact same way I taught my 2 year old nephew not to drink Drano!

How to deter a puppy from chewing on power cords?
Q. We have a 3 1/2 mth old puppy who has started to chew on the power cords under my desk. In the past 2 nights she has chewed through the power cord for my VoIP phone, my mobile charger and the charger for my laptop. We bought a "stop chew" spray that does taste bitter (I tested) however when we sprayed it on a peg and gave it to her she the taste didn't seem to bother her. She has plenty of chew toys and other things to chew on. Does anyone have any suggestions on what we can spray/wipe on the cables that might deter her from chewing on them? well we tried a thai hot chilli sauce (not quite as hot a wasabi but up there taste wise) however that didn't seem to work. How do you keep your baby away from electrical cords?
Q. My daughter is drawn to electrical cords. And if we're not careful she'd love to just shove the thing in her mouth and chew. I have baby gates, and doors shut so that eliminates all cords except one. And it's a lamp so it's not like I can just unplug it because then we'd be in the dark. :) Other than constantly pulling her away from it, is there anything I can do to hide the cord or something? What do you do with cords?

Q. I love my cats, but one of them is costing me a lot of money. She likes to chew through all my cords. Recently, she chewed through my modem cords, and for some reason it destroyed the modem. Those things cost $70! Can anybody help me? Thanks for the ideas. I've tried the water gun approach, but it has not worked for me. I may have to give that bitter apple thing a try.
Asked by Jonathan - Sun Apr 1 17:33:36 2007 - - 10 Answers - Comments

A. Don't buy sprays for your cords - your cat could still bite through them and possibly get hurt. Consider looking into wire bundlers - these are plastic wraps that bundle all of your cords into one tube so it keeps the wires away from kitty and looks more presentable. If possible, try keeping kitty away from the computer room by keeping a squirt bottle handy when she goes to chew.

How to make your own extension cords?
Q. We need extension cords here and there around our home, but they always come in specific lengths that are almost always way longer than what we need. How easy is it to make extension cords yourself. Can I buy the parts and custom make the exact lengths I need? How easy is it?
Asked by j h - Sun Oct 21 11:43:13 2007 - - 7 Answers - Comments

A. You can buy the parts and make up your own extension cords. But be aware that extension cords are a leading cause of home fires. The electric code thus states that "extension cords are not to be used in place of permanent building wiring." What that means is, they are fine to run a drill or a trouble light, but not to be used permanently or for long periods of time to power things that should actually be plugged into a receptacle in the wall. If you need a receptacle somewhere, have one installed. That is much cheaper than a fire.

Is it wrong to put extension cords together to get a longer cord?
Q. I just needed to connect my heater (2400 W) in the other corner of the room and didn't have a long enough cord. So I took three extension cords and kept plugging one into the other until I was able to span the room and connect my heater. I darkly remember someone saying this to be a bad idea - but is it?
Asked by Coris Airport - Fri Jul 20 05:34:48 2007 - - 14 Answers - Comments

A. Yes yes yes it is wrong & dangerous!!! 120 volt X 20 amps =2400 watts This is something that should be on its own circuit. Try and feel the cords for the wire inside heating up.A # 12 wire is good for 20 amps. You can buy a # 12 25 foot extension cord for around $30.00.However a heater should never be pluged into a cord. The el-cheap-0 cords for lamps or the 100 foot #16 wire will burn your house down.Just call you local fire department to inquire on a major cause of house fires. There should be a law against space heaters...

How to keep computer cords neat and organized behind the computer?
Q. What is the best way to organize and manage all those cords from the computer? I have looked and most of cord managing/detangling things available commercially just don't appeal to me. I either just don't like the way they look OR they seem inadequate for the task OR the professional ones seem way too complex to use. I just want a simple easy way to keep all the cords untangled, separated and neat, and I would also want to label them, in case I need to move/unplug something. I am also including here the phone, modem and a desk lamp cord. I don't want anything that would damage the desk or the wall. Any creative suggestions?

A. get a plastic channel for wires at an electronics supply store. These are the type that are used in industrical eletrical cabinets. Or you could use plastic zip ties to bundle cords together. There are some that have round plastic holes in them so they can screwed into something, then have the wires zipped together. Use wire snips or side cutters to remove the excess zip tie. Also, you'll probably need more extensions if you really want to keep things tidy and neat. There are sticky pads used for sticking to a surface, so you can run the zip tie through. Check it out at Home Depot, or any eletronic supply store. You could also get a little labeler from Staples to label you cords. Rubber bands work temporarily, but breakdown. Tape… [cont.]
