How can I make branches collected safe for a reptile enclosure?
Q. I'm setting up a large reptile enclosure and have found various logs and branches to furnish it with. How can I make them safe for use. I would prefer not to buy the over prices logs sold in the pet stores. I'm setting the cage up for a Timor monitor. Thanx for any help.

A. If you can fit it in your oven, you can bake it for a while to kill insects. Dead wood carries more bugs than live wood that's been cut. You could also try washing the wood with mild soap and water or a mild bleach solution. Make sure that if you use the bleach that you allow it to sit in the sun to break down the chlorine in there.

Project ideas to show the 3 branches of our government?
Q. My 4th grader has a project due where she has to show the 3 branches of our government and the jobs of each branch. They want them to do a creative visual that shows these branches. For example I had an idea to do a tree and then hang from 3 branches the jobs, but she says a few people are already doing that and she wanted something different. She said a crutch (?) and labeling it, but I don'T have crutches. Another idea the teacher gave was a stool where the legs were named as the branches. Does anyone have any great ideas like this? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

A. I would do a mobile, because one of the most important aspects of the branches of government is that they balance each other. No one branch is allowed to control the others. In a mobile you could show this by showing that if you pull one of the parts, the whole mobile tilts and is no longer in balance. Good luck!

Can a neighbor throw tree branches into my yard if they are from my tree?
Q. I have a large maple tree in my yard and some of the branches hang over my neighbor's yard. Recent storms have caused small branches to fall into their yard. I caught the neighbor throwing the branches over the fence into my yard. They say it is my responsibility to pick up after my tree. I don't think they should dump every fallen branch into my yard. Who's right?
Asked by Leah - Wed Oct 3 15:16:19 2007 - Garden & Landscape - 12 Answers - Comments

A. Check with your city council on what the local rules are. Regardless, this neighbor was rude to just toss the branches over. They should have checked the ordinance themselves, and if you're responsible, it would have been polite for them to inform you, then respectfully ask where they can leave your branches.

What us army officer branches should my husband consider?
Q. My husband is 29 and trying to make the final decision on what officer branches to consider. He got his degree in Liberal arts (theater) and has been doing corporate mngmnt for 6 yrs. The recruiter told him to make a wishlist for what branches he might be interested in. He also said in the end it makes no difference what you want to do if you are an officer. They look at your degree and past experience and just put you wherever. Are there any areas he would be more qualified for?

How to prevent branches from growing at the base of the crape myrtle tree?
Q. I would like to know if there is any way to prevent the branches from growing at the base of the tree. I have to cut them every 2 months. Is there anything I can do or put on the cut branches to prevent them from growing?? Any help will be greatly appreciate.
Asked by dennis68471 - Thu Nov 30 09:00:40 2006 - Garden & Landscape - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Your problem is that you are cutting them. When you cut them the buds around the cut site them sprout. Better to pull them of carefully at the trunk. You may still have to do this for some time but you will eventually beat it. Be careful when you use 'whipper snipers' and lawnmowers around the base of the tree they may be damaging the bark and encouraging this as well. Also if the tree is not doing so well the under graft may be trying to grow to compensate they are usually tougher than the actual top. If the tree is not doing well fertilize and water well regularly to help correct the problem.

How to promote growth of branches from a tall tree trunk?
Q. The lower branches (at about 8 ft and 10 ft) were mistakenly sawn off the main trunk of a Melaleuca tree, approx. 20 years old, in my garden. The next branch comes off the main trunk at about 25 ft. The tree is about 30 ft tall. So there are NO branches below 25 ft. How can I get a few lower branches to grow out from the main trunk?
Asked by SRS - Sun Apr 22 00:57:12 2007 - Garden & Landscape - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Trees grow from the top not the bottom. A branch at 20' off the ground will always be 20'. Some trees are "shrubby" and will produce growth from the main trunk in an attempt to maintain a shrub type growth that must be removed yearly in order to maintain a treelike shape. True trees will not sprout branches from the trunk below the current growth occurring at the top. Try planting some smaller "understory " trees or shrubs beneath and around this one to create a more "filled in" look.

What happens when you switch military branches and how many times can you do it?
Q. I plan to serve in the marines, but once i'm done I want to go to ranger school and then green beret training, and possibly SEALS. I wanted to know stuff such as does you rank go with you? Which military uniform do you wear, do commendations go with you. Or will I be throwing away my military past when i switch branches.
Asked by ReaverMMA - Tue May 11 22:33:30 2010 - Military - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Okay, I'll let you know something. It's not easy to get one of those schools you listed. Ranger school was the easiest and you generally have to go into a particular MOS and then pass the school That means you're looking at a minimum contract at the beginning just to start. Then, if you are good, you might be able to re-enlist, go to NCO school and possible get a SF sergeants spot (all SF comes with minimum Federal Service requirements). It's a career just to get to "Green Berets". Then to switch to the Marines, run a minimum contract with them, then trying out for SEALS when you will be probably in your late thirties or early forties. You might want to scale back a bit. Now, when you switch branches, you become a member of that… [cont.]

What is the penalty for cutting branches off of a township tree?
Q. During the previous storm a branch from a tree in front of our yard broke and almost hit our car. We did not know that we needed special permission to cut the branches over our driveway or yard. My husband cut two branches and now we got a ticket and court appearance from township municipal court . What do we need to do or expect?

A. Each township is going to have its own local regulations. I wouldn't think it would be too much, given the circumstances -- but who knows.

What branches of the military have physical therapy as a career?
Q. I want to go into some branch of the military for physical therapy, but I'm having a hard time finding branches that offer it. The only one I know for certain is the Army. But my first choices are Air Force, Navy, and the Coast Guard.

A. Army, Air Force and Navy all use Physical therapists; I am not sure about the CG but did not see this as an option on the HS rating, The Marines get all their medical support from the Navy. You have have a Master's degree to be e physical therapist (PT), and would be an officer; the services do have PT assistants however. In the Navy you'd become a Corpsman and go to a "C" school for specialized training. Air force: I don't see an Army MOS that would seem to apply directly.

What can the other branches do to override a Court decision?
Q. The Courts are definitely empowered in their policy making functions. As it says in Dynamics, the COnstitution was vague on the powers and limitations of the Courts. Therefore, the courts had the power to establish their two most important rules. The first was that the Federal Courts had the power to overrule the rulings of the State Courts. The other was that the Federal COurts also had the power to overrule the decisions of both the legislative and executive branches of government. This basically gives the federal courts power over all the different branches of government. So even though the Legislative branch by definition makes the laws and policies, the Courts can make their own laws and policies by overruling those made by Congress.

A. The Supreme Court interprets the constitution and legislation. The basic principle is that the Supreme Court tries to get to the intent of legislation, and determines if the intent conflicts with the intent of the Constitution. In general, all lower courts do the same thing; they try to determine an appropriate judgement by using the intent of law makers and the prior decisions of the Supreme Court. The other branches of government cannot directly interfere with the workings of the court. However, when something has been left vague in previous law and has been interpretted by the courts, the legislature can go back and amend or make new law to make their intent clearer. Often the courts will include advice in their judgement to the… [cont.]

A. I can't know if answer 1 is correct, and I am curious about where you are, why you may not have inquired locally, even in GARDEN rather than DIY, what the plant is, and certainly why in replanting you didn't water it, even SOAK it for a couple days, settle the soil so that the roots would not have been affected by air/loose soil, and other than my notions, have no suggestions. I am VERY familiar however with biology, especially that of plant life, and essentially you SHOCKED the plant, perhaps even not offering it any recovery? I want to assume you have access to the Garden section of Q&A, and perhaps even a garden center local to you, or even a way to navigate the WWW with keywords in a search to help you. What type of cut Christmas tree has the strongest branches for holding heavy decorations?

A. In writing the Declaration of Independence, there was no central or federal government but a group of delegates from the Colonies. In that they had not separated until the Declaration was signed they were still British Colonies. Following the Declaration, the State Delegates formed a Continental Congress and came up with the Articles of Confederation of the States to become known as the United States of America. Following the Articles of Confederation the United States in Congress was the only branch of the Government until the ratification of the Constitution of the United States of America. L8r

How do judicial and legislative branches of government work together to ensure proper functioning of society?
Q. Needing big help here. I'm not quite sure exactly what the judicial and legislate branches of government does. What roles do they perform? How do they work together?
Asked by Mark R - Sun Nov 1 01:01:04 2009 - Government - 2 Answers - Comments

A. For one thing, the government does not ensure a proper functioning of society. People are perfectly capable of making their own decisions and they are happiest when allowed to do that. Government does two things very well: fight wars and run a court system. History shows that people can do that on their own with the proper motivations As for your actual question, it depends where you are. In most English speaking countries, there is one body -- a parliament -- possibly with two houses, that does almost everything important that a government does. Making laws, creating taxes, high-court for ruling on civil and criminal cases, it's your one-stop shop for basically everything. Q. I am going into the Naval Academy and this requires me to do 5 years of service, which I am excited about doing, but what I particularly want to do is join the Coast Guard. So after those five years in the Navy, would it be possible for me to switch branches into the Coast Guard? And if I can what are the requirements? Thanks!
Asked by Kayla - Mon Jul 25 14:00:00 2011 - Military - 2 Answers - Comments

A. After you fulfill your initial committment, you can try to transfer to another branch. It is sometimes hard to transfer commissions but if you have a job in the Navy that the Coast Guard has, it should not be too difficult. Before your active duty obligation is up, you want to contact a Coast Guard Officer recruiter to see if they have an opening for you. Make sure that you can transfer without having a break in service because if you get a break in service, it screws up your retirement. Another thing that you might want to look into is seeing if you can join the Coast Guard reserves after your time is up.
