Raksi or Rakshi (रक्शी) is a traditional distilled alcoholic beverage in Tibet and Nepal. It is usually made from kodo or millet but can also be made from rice. It is a strong drink, clear rather like vodka or gin, and is often brewed at home.

Because of its popularity, there exists a temperance movement in Nepal, with women's groups agitating to ban it.

Rakshi, however, is traditionally an important requirement at a lot of religious rituals and social events, perhaps because it is not only an alcoholic drink but also because its alcoholic nature is seen as being antiseptic.

Serving

Raksi is often served in a bhatti glass and during special occasions, the drink is poured from a great height via a pitcher with a small spout, making an entertaining spectacle.

Production

Raksi is produced, sold and mostly consumed at rustic distilleries scattered around the countryside. Usually it is not aged before consumption. A large amount of wood is used in the distillation process.
