How about ending ALL tax breaks for corporations - including ethanol, solar and all "green" energy?
Q. Let everyone compete on a level playing field. I doubt the result will be to the Liberals' liking.

A. Deal. Any special break or subsidy enjoyed by one person or company that is not enjoyed by another is contrary to free markets.

I am watching a show on the Science Channel called "Futurecar". I have a question about ethanol vehicles.
Q. This show says you can convert your car to take E85 fuel (85% Ethanol) for around $100. How? Where can I get this done? And last if I dont have an E85 station anywhere close can I still use regular gasoline?
Asked by larryandshaunafuller - Wed Mar 5 02:26:49 2008 - Alternative Fuel Vehicles - 5 Answers - Comments

A. Yes a flex-fuel car (which is capable of using ethanol blends) can also run on pure gasoline. You should give this a lot of consideration before making the conversion though. Ethanol doesn't benefit anybody except corn farmers. It costs a bit less per gallon than gasoline, but ethanol also has a lower energy density, meaning you have to buy 4 gallons of E85 to go the same distance as 3 gallons of pure gasoline, so in the end it costs you more. Plus studies have shown that because the increased demand for ethanol would cause forestland to be cut down to grow corn, it actually contributes more to global warming than gasoline. And ethanol also drives up the price of the food crops since we're also using them for fuel. So basically everybody… [cont.]

A. Try imagining your life without technology. Without alarm clocks, refrigerators, computers, telephones and so on. It would be very different from what we are accustomed to today. The truth is, all of us rely on technology a great deal to get through the day. Whether it's at work, at home, or at school, I know my family depends greatly on technology. Without technology our lives would all be much different. My sisters and I use technology at school a lot. We are always on the computers doing research and typing papers. Can we find a better word for certain energy resources than "renewable"?
Q. Yesterday I cruised Yahoo's best answers and saw a question about the most efficient renewable resources. The answer chosen as best may have been the best of those given. I wasn't much impressed. To me the word "renewable" applies to corn-based ethanol, switch grass and the like. When one brings up wind, geothermal, electromagnetic, solar, tidal, hydroelectric, or any reliably recurring natural force, the term "virtually unlimited" strikes me as being more accurate. This answerer had abandoned hydroelectric because it kills fish. If current methods of tapping this resource kill fish, let's fix our methods, not give up on the resource. Same with solar power. The answer I saw dismissed solar power as "not worth… [cont.]

What's going to be the "new technology industry" in the next 10-30 years?
Q. In the 1980-1990's, the big boom to latch on to was computers. Everything was about computers, and how they would (and did) revolutionize the world. They created multiple jobs, new fields of work, revolutionized communication, and much, much more. So I ask, what's the next big thing? What new technology will we be looking at in 10-30 years? A. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a warm season grass and is one of the dominant species of the central North American tallgrass prairie. Switchgrass can be found in remnant prairies, along roadsides, pastures and as an ornamental plant in gardens. Other common names for this grass include tall panic grass, Wobsqua grass, lowland switchgrass, blackbent, tall prairiegrass, wild redtop and thatchgrass. Properties=== Switchgrass is a hardy, perennial bunch grass which begins growth in late spring. It can grow up to 1.8-2.2 m in height but is typically shorter than Big Bluestem grass or Indiangrass. The leaves are 30-90 cm long with a prominent midrib. Switchgrass uses C4 carbon fixation, giving it an advantage in conditions of drought and… [cont.]

Q. I am a substitute teacher interested in biofuels and this question came up in one class. One boy whose dad is a corn farmer informed me that they didn't use "corn on the cob" (human food) varieties for producing E85 ethanol.

A. Anything fermentable can be used to make ethanol, but yellow dent seems to be the most common feedstock for ethanol fuel production right now. It's also the most commonly grown midwestern US corn type.

Is Ethanol being used as a 10% "stretcher" in all gasoline octane levels or just regular?
Q. I know that Ethanol is being used as a "stretcher" by most major gasoline companies. I know that the Ethanol actually reduces your miles per gallon. What I'm wondering is are they using it as a "stretcher" in all octane levels or just regular? It seems the 10 cents more for plus around here would actually be worth it for me if I get even an extra .5 - 1 mile per gallon more.

A. All grades. Actually, Ethanol is used as an oxygenator, to help improve the combustion so there's less tail-pipe emissions. The other alternative, MTBE, was phased out by California, as MTBE is corrosive and long-term effects doesn't look good. It'd be easier to save fuel by checking your tires a properly tuning up your vehicles.

Has the commitment to science and technology in the name of "Progress" been worth it?
Q. Modern science and technology have been astonishingly successful at manipulating and controlling the material environment in ways that benefit human health and quality of life. For all its achievements, however, science remains a rapidly evolving tradition. Modern science and technology present formidable challenges to religious faith, yet the prestige of modern science derives from its universality. That is, the same scientific experiment should work as well in New York as in New Delhi, as well in a Jewish laboratory as in a Muslim one. The successes of science also led to new problems. For example, the biotechnological revolution gave scientists the ability to manipulate genes and, in principle, to clone (make individual genetic… [cont.]

A. This is a brilliant question and is a dilemma which faces scientists today! Possibly the biggest dilemma is morality! First of all let me begin by saying that i disagree that all citizens should have a massive say in what goes on in science. I understand that we all live in a society and scientific advances affect everybody but in my opinion the vast majority of people in society don't understand many scientific aspects. Could a random person off the street explain in detail about quantum mechanics or DNA? Probably not! so why should they make decisions on it? If or when NASCAR switches to ethanol then how will it be regulated by "fuel injection" or?
Q. "throttle body injection". What I am wanting to know is if NASCAR will own the injection systems and issue them out before each race or will the teams be allowed to use and experiment with their own injections. Also would NASCAR have a separate energy source just to run the injection system off of in case there was a power loss of of some kind? Or could they use it on the same electrical circuit? Will they require computers?
Asked by - Sat Dec 12 15:18:23 2009 - NASCAR - 2 Answers - Comments

A. The change in fuel and fuel system will probably come at the same time. Nascar is not about to let teams or manufacturers develop their own fuel injection. Nascar has to have complete control. Hendrick has been testing fuel injection for Nascar use and reporting the findings to Nascar. The fuel injection will be a throttle body injector. 4 injectors, a throttle position switch and a MAP sensor all in one TBI unit. It will have a sealed harness going to the fuel management control unit (computer) mounted on the dash. The computer, along with the sealed harness will have connections for 12 volt input and tachometer input. No other wiring will be allowed. The computers and possibly the TBI units will be issued by Nascar. The teams will flash… [cont.]

Why more lies on the amount of"energy"in ethanol or biodiesel?Ethanol engines need higher compression ratios!?
Q. The "most profitable business ever", Exxon\Mobil and other petroleum companies should lose all their tax credits for these lies. How can I tell if ethanol, or E85, is "actually" cheaper to use than gas?
Q. I know that ethanol is less efficient than gas, therefore you have to fill up more often and get less mpg. So my question is, is there some type of formula to tell if it is indeed cheaper to use E85 as opposed to gas by their current price gap?
Asked by Scotty R - Mon Jun 30 12:09:52 2008 - Commuting - 2 Answers - Comments

A. The typical decrease in mileage when using E-85 is 27%. To calculate your mileage on E-85 take your current mileage and multiply by .27. The number you get from that you will then subtract from your current mpg. Example: 15mpg (gas)X0.27= 4.05 15-4.05= 11.95mpg (E-85) Now get the prices for both gas and E-85. Choose a distance for instance how many miles you drive a week. Divide that by your mpg, you'll need to do it twice once with gas mpg and once with E-85 mpg. This will tell you how many gallons you will use for that distance Example: Distance: 300 miles Gas mpg: 15mpg 300 miles/15mpg= 20 gallons of gas Distance: 300 miiles E-85 mpg: 11.95mpg 300 miles/11.95mpg= 25 gal (rounded) of E-85 After you figure out how many gallons you will… [cont.]

A. it definetly is not flex fuel capable. i would run it down to 3/4 tank and fill up with regular gas. run a little more and add more gas. it probably wont do anything if it is just one time. repeatedly it will harm your whole fuel system.
