Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, pure alcohol, grain alcohol, or drinking alcohol, is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid. It is a powerful psychoactive drug, best known as the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages and in modern thermometers. Ethanol is one of the oldest recreational drugs. In common usage, it is often referred to simply as alcohol or spirits.

Ethanol is a straight-chain alcohol, and its molecular formula is C2H5OH. Its empirical formula is C2H6O. An alternative notation is CH3–CH2–OH, which indicates that the carbon of a methyl group (CH3–) is attached to the carbon of a methylene group (–CH2–), which is attached to the oxygen of a hydroxyl group (–OH). It is a constitutional isomer of dimethyl ether. Ethanol is often abbreviated as EtOH, using the common organic chemistry notation of representing the ethyl group (C2H5) with Et.

The fermentation of sugar into ethanol is one of the earliest organic reactions employed by humanity. The intoxicating effects of ethanol consumption have been known since ancient times. In modern times, ethanol intended for industrial use is also produced from by-products of petroleum refining.

Ethanol has widespread use as a solvent of substances intended for human contact or consumption, including scents, flavorings, colorings, and medicines. In chemistry, it is both an essential solvent and a feedstock for the synthesis of other products. It has a long history as a fuel for heat and light, and more recently as a fuel for internal combustion engines.

What does the compostion of ethanol and water have to do with the reason for ethanol boiling first?
Q. if that makes sense, where it has to do with the hydrogen bonding and the polar/nonpolar ends that make the ethanol vaporize before the water. other wise. why does ethanol have a lover boiling point than water?

A. ethanol is not as polar as water. Water is an extremely polar molecule, this is often described by the hydrogen bonds present in water. This causes there to be strong intermolecular forces. Since the intermolecular forces of water are much stronger than those of ethanol, it causes water to stay in the liquid form for longer.

What role do government subsidies play in the ethanol industry?
Q. Who receives the subsidies? Is it corn producers or ethanol plant producers, or both? How much are the subsidies and how long are they slated to last? Any body know? Thanks very much.

A. The money is nothing mopre than guarantee that the ethanol program will keep going! If it weren't for the subsidies it would fail ! As most people are not concerned about the environment and don't trust the feds either..

Do you think it is morally wrong to use ethanol? What is a better alternative to ethanol?
Q. I ask this because much of the ethanol we use in our vehicles comes from grains which are high in starch. The more ethanol produced, the less food is available. This results in higher food prices. This makes it harder for people living in poorer nations to afford the food they need to survive.

A. Sorry, but you are falling victim to the lies of the oil companies. Get the facts. Not one person in human history has ever starved as a result of using ethanol as a fuel. Brazil has been using it for 30 years and has never had 1 documented case of human suffering due to food shortages caused by ethanol. 1/3 of all corn grown in the US is exported to other countries to feed them. This is AFTER we meet all of our food and ethanol needs. Growing demand for ethanol is leading to world record corn planting and output, increasing the supply of food. And food corn is not used to make ethanol. Feed corn is used. The distiller's grain leftover after ethanol is made from feed corn is utilized to feed farm animals. Myth---Ethanol production… [cont.]
